This workshop is on Working with mature aged singers in a choir setting. Which is applicable to most church choirs. Not all. But most.

As our aging population increases and is living even longer, I feel it is our job in the arts and particularly in the singing arena, to be engaging more of this mature community in an enriching singing experience. In the session I will be welcoming Faye Dumont to present some of the wealth of knowledge she has gained about the aging singing voice.
Following this, I would like to talk about one of my groups, Vintage Voices, which I have been leading since 2010. This group has continued to grow out of a program that Rosemary Poulgrain created within Centacare (social services arm of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Brisbane). The youngest singer in this group is 60, whilst the oldest is 100. The initial project was created to address social isolation through the establishment of a community choir. Participants are drawn from the frail, aged community, and people from diverse cultural backgrounds. At its peak there were over 60 singers who attended weekly, and Vintage Voices has become much more than its original objectives with the group raising the roof to the most sensitive and powerful singing.
The session will include some warm-ups that I have found work well with my group, some rehearsal techniques, repertoire choices and general discussion on how much I enjoy working with my group.
