His 1992 book on the Salvation A rmy in Australia was awarded the Christian Book of the Year. In 2008\, Joh n was host of the interfaith event held by the Catholic Church in conjunct ion with World Youth Day and the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. On the Sunday after All Souls Day\, the Cath edral Choir and Schola will combine to give a performance of Gabriel Fauré ’s Requiem – one of his best known works – accompanied by orchestra. The c ombined Cathedral choirs add this work to a growing list of Requiems perfo rmed in recent years\, including those of Michael Haydn\, Maurice Duruflé\ , and Zoltán Kodály.
\nThough at the time of composing the Requiem i n the late 1880s his parents had recently died\, Fauré maintained that he had no specific reason for composing it. It is a work of both raw passion and elegant beauty. \nRobin’s been leading and writing songs for over 40 years\, and he hopes to do some more yet. Version 1 .0 and For you\, deep stillness)\, he also perfor ms some ‘non-singalong’ songs\, especially for gr oups who didn’t get the ‘community singing’ gene.
\nRobin’s married to Doro thy and their long partnership has produced 3 children\, numerous songs an d many recordings. They’re both into a down-to-earth\, commonplace sort of Christian faith. Their experience has led them to focus on God in the ordinary\, and especially God-in-the-flesh bringing the wondrous new world out of a messy Roman-gall ows death.
\nRobin’s songs focus on the ‘low way’\, the way that invites others not to escape every day reality\, but to get deeper into it\, He has a strong commitment to ‘plain’ Christianity\, a faith that trusts in the mystery of the ‘God-man’ Jesus\, and doesn’t look for miracles — apart from the numerous everyd ay ones already provided. He tries to include a wide variety of musical styles in his wri ting and collecting: ‘N o music is holier than any other!’ Come and listen\, and sing!

ah\, over the course of an astounding 24 days – a feat\, as we know\, not
unusual for him. He was no stranger to such lightning-speed bouts of epic
composition. His Messiah has long been a recognised seasonal favourite\, a

On the 26th November 20 17\, Hinterland residents and visitors will be treated to a music al degustation of excerpts from this glorious oratorio\, in half-hour\, bi te-sized courses at three venues through our Hinterland.

Not only in some violent parts of the world but in our own land and our o
wn city\,
\nsuch tolerance perhaps is still needed.
There wil
l not be a choir at this service but with 11 hymns\, and two psalms to Ang
lican chants\, any who would like to come and strengthen the singing would
be very welcome.
\nMr Mark Quarmby\, the Organist of St Stephen’s\,
will accompany the music and provide a prelude for all to listen to after
the service begins !

The Cathedral’s promoter writes:
\nFor the third year runni ng\, St Patrick’s Cathedral\, Parramatta will be hosting a Mother’s Day Co ncert. This is a lovely afternoon consisting of a one hour music concert\, followed by afternoon tea. The music features some of the Cathedral’s ver y own talented singers and musicians\, including organ scholars performing on the Cathedral’s impressive Norman and Beard Pipe Organ. Mothers also r eceive a special blessing from one of the Cathedral’s priests and a couple of musical pieces are sung to honour the Mother of our Lord. This year\, a men’s vocal group will be singing a few familiar songs to serenade and celebrate mothers. There will also be a flute and violin duo by G.P. Telem ann performed\, an excerpt from Francesco Durante’s Magnificat\, and a tra ditional Spanish lullaby sung by a ladies’ vocal group. The Mother’s Day C oncert is sure to be a beautiful afternoon of music in a wonderful acousti c\, followed by culinary delights. So bring mum\, bring grandma\, bring th e whole family\, or come with some friends. Let’s all come together to cel ebrate and honour all mothers.

to relaunch its Organ Recital Series in 2018\, following the completion of
repair work on the organ. To open this year’s series\, it gives us great
pleasure to welcome Roger Sayer\, Organist and Director of Music at the Te
mple Church in London. A pupil of Nicholas Danby at the Royal College of M
usic\, where he won all of the organ prizes\, he was also a prizewinner at
the 1989 St Alban’s International Organ Competition. Since then\, he has
been constantly in demand both as a recitalist and accompanist and his pla
ying takes him to many parts of the world.
After nearly twenty years at Rochester Cathedral as Org anist and Director of Music\, in 2013 Sayer was appointed to the Temple Ch urch in London\, where he has since created an impressive portfolio of rec ordings\, broadcasts and concerts.
\nSayer’s work as organist has al so extended into the film world\, with his most recent performance as orga n soloist for Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-nominated score for the motion picture I nterstellar. Zimmer said of Sayer: “He is\, without exaggeration\, an extr aordinary artist\, whose humanity shines in the impeccable artistry that f lows from his hands….”

Andrew Liang is 17 years old. He started violin at the a ge of six. He is currently in year 12 at Ku-Ring-Gai High School. In 2011 he was selected for the Australian String Academy’s special program as a v iolin talent and learns with Professor Peter Zhang.
\nAndrew won the 2014 under 14 violin solo section in the Sydney Eisteddfod\, and subseque ntly performed on MTV for Missy Higgins’ new album. In 2014 Andrew was cho sen to represent his school in a solo performance at Hornsby RSL. In 2015 he won second place in the under 16 violin solo section of the Sydney Eist eddfod. In 2015 and 2016 Andrew played a musical violin tribute at the Ros eville RSL ANZAC Commemoration ceremony. In 2018\, Andrew was awarded the Meadowmount School of Music Camp Scholarship to study in the United States of America for seven weeks. In 2018 he was chosen as a member of the Scho ols Spectacular orchestra.

brating its thirtieth anniversary. In order to celebrate the achievement o
f thirty years the schola is preparing for\, and offering\, an OPEN NIGHT.
The evening will include singing by the schola and will present\, amongst
other things\, several items from different Masses in the Kyriale. For ex
ample\, the traditional Mass IX Cum Jubilo using its fifteenth century man
uscript source\, followed by a Kyrie composed by St Hildegard of Bingen d.
1179. This last is one of the earliest complete music works by a known com
poser. In comparison to the centonized Cum Jubilo Kyrie\, the cascading me
lismas of Hildegard’s work reveal the work of one brilliantly creative per
son. In an increasingly secularized world\, the singers of The Gregorian S
chola of Sydney have aimed to contribute to faith\, education\, and cultur
e in these last thirty years. We now seek your support for the next thirty

raged by his late grandfather\, Anglican Bishop Neville Chynoweth\, himsel
f also a musician\, David received his first piano lessons at the age of s
ix and continued to receive musical tuition throughout his childhood. Foll
owing his HSC at Canberra Grammar School he moved directly to Europe to be
gin his music studies. In Italy\, he studied Organ Performance\, Early Mus
ic\, Piano\, Composition and Harpsichord at the Conservatorium of Music in
Frosinone where\, in 2012\, he was awarded a Diploma in Organ with full m
arks and distinction. He was then accepted in the organ class of Pier Dam
iano Peretti\, Michael Radulescu’s successor at the Universität für Musik
und darstellende Kunst\, Wien (University of Music and Performing Arts\, V
ienna) where he continued his musical formation for many years. At the con
clusion of studies in Vienna\, he was awarded his Master of Music with a m
ajor in Organ performance. To perfect his technique\, David has ta
ken part in numerous master classes at historic European (A. Cavaillé-Coll
\, A. Schnitger and Wöckherl) organs with distinguished organists such as
Louis Robilliard\, Michel Bouvard\, Daniel Roth\, Jean Claude Zehnder\, Lu
c Ponet and Wolfgang Zerer. Since 2011\, David has performed exten
sively in Austria\, the United States\, Spain\, Germany\, England and in I
taly\, where he currently resides. He has been invited to hold eight inau
guration concerts of new and restored old instruments (e.g. most recently
in May 2019 the dedication recital of the new Peragallo pipe organ at St.L
eonard’s Boston MA\, USA) and to participate in important recital festival
s such as Volles Werk\; the Austrian National Organ Festival\; Wiener Orge
lkonzerte\, Musica Imperialis (in St. Stephen’s Cathedral\, Vienna)\, Will
iam Hill and Son Grand Organ Concerts (Barossa Regional Gallery\, Australi
a)\, Quincena de San Sebastian (San Sebastian\, Spain)\, St. Michaelis-Kir
che (Hamburg\, Germany)\, Maggio Musicale\, Roma Festival Barocco (Italy)
etc. In 2017\, David was one of few organists from all over the wo
rld\, and the only Australian in recent years\, to be chosen after a very
selective process to participate in the celebrated St Albans International
Organ Festival Competition (UK). Arguably the world’s most celebrated org
an competition\, a place in the biannual St.Albans Competition has been co
veted by emerging concert artists since its founding in 1963. In 2
018\, he gave his first extensive concert tour in Australia\, performing t
welve recitals in major capital cities at significant venues including St.
Andrew’s Cathedral\, St. James’s King St.\, Sydney\, St. Paul’s Burwood\,
St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral\, Goulburn\, St. Paul’s Ipswich\, Brisbane
\, St. John’s Reid\, Canberra\, St. Michael’s on Collins St\, Melbourne\,
St. Jude’s Bowral and at the 1877 Hill Organ of Adelaide Town Hall\, recen
tly restored and relocated in the Barossa Regional Gallery\, Tanunda. David nurtures profound respect for the organ music of all periods an
d his broad repertoire encompasses works from the Renaissance unto the pre
sent day\, including compositions and numerous transcriptions of his own.
In 2020 he will return to perform in Australia and already has in agenda n
umerous events in Europe\, in Canada and in the United States of America (
in particular in St. Patrick’s Cathedral\, New York).
